Angklung: Indonesia's Traditional Bamboo Instrument

The word "angklung" originates from the Sundanese term "angkleung-angkleung," describing the player's rhythmic movements, while "klung" represents the instrument's distinct musical tone.

Each note is produced by differently sized bamboo tubes. When shaken, these tubes create harmonious melodies, requiring collective playing to form complete musical pieces.

Crafted primarily from black bamboo (Awi wulung) or bamboo ater (Awi temen) – known for its yellowish-white hue when dried – angklung consists of 2-4 bamboo tubes of varying sizes bound together with rattan.

How to Play the Angklung

Playing the angklung is relatively simple: hold the frame's upper portion and shake the lower section to produce sound. There are three fundamental techniques:

1. Kerulung (Vibration)

The most basic technique involves continuously shaking the bamboo tubes from side to side while maintaining the note.

2. Centok (Jerk)

This method produces a single, sharp sound by quickly pulling the tube against the palm with the fingers.

3 Tengkep

Players vibrate specific tubes while silencing others, creating isolated individual notes.

Types of Angklung

Throughout its history, various Indonesian regions have developed distinct angklung varieties:

1. Angklung Kanekes

Originating from the Baduy people, this ceremonial instrument is exclusively played during rice planting rituals and crafted solely by the Baduy Dalam community.

2. Angklung Reog

This variant accompanies Reog Ponorogo dances in East Java, featuring unique shapes and louder, two-note sounds. Often called klong kluk, some serve decorative purposes.

3. Angklung Dogdog Lojor

Used in rice plant veneration rituals by Banten Kidul's Kasepuhan Pancer Pangawinan community, this sacred tradition persists annually with six players - four handling large angklung and two playing Dogdog Lojor.

4. Angklung Badeng

Originally accompanying rice-planting ceremonies in Garut, this instrument later adapted for Islamic proselytization. A complete set requires nine components including roel, kecer, indung, anak angklung, dogdog, and gembyung.

5. Angklung Padaeng

Daeng Soetigna revolutionized this diatonic version in 1938 by modifying bamboo structures, enabling integration with modern instruments. His vision was furthered by Handiman Diratmasasmita and Udjo Ngalegena, who advanced its international musical standing.
