In the material realm, your body teeters between life and death, your heart still beating, yet your spirit has been transported to the nightmarish Afterlife. Oppression and injustice dominate this dark realm under Death’s absolute control. At the bottom of the social hierarchy are the Penitents: unfortunate souls indebted to Death, twisted by his magic into uncanny animal-human hybrids. Above them stand the Elect: those favored by Death, enjoying a life of freedom, privilege, and luxury.

Moreover, the Afterlife is succumbing to an even deeper and more mysterious corruption. Performers have vanished from the luxurious entertainment center; a sanctuary for both Penitents and the Elect is under attack; and a mysterious illness is spreading across the land.
