Moth Lake offers a narrative-rich experience, boasting over 20,000 words of text and more than 300 unique scenarios. The story delves into mystery, horror, and the innermost thoughts of its characters. While the game touches on dark and somber themes, it also features nonsensical humor and quirky dialogues, blurring the line between horror and comedy.

Players navigate a 2.5D world, interacting with numerous hotspots and NPCs. Characters can manipulate objects and perform various actions to solve diverse puzzles. The modern pixel art style showcases a vibrant color palette and extensive frame-by-frame animations, including talking, walking, running, crouching, crawling, pushing, climbing, sneaking, punching, and throwing.

The game's environments are enhanced with modern lighting and shading effects, particle systems, and parallax scrolling to create a 3D-like experience. There are six main characters and over 50 NPCs, each with unique appearances and personalities. Players can control seven characters in the main story and more in additional chapters. Character animations include eye movements, facial expressions, and distinctive behaviors.

As the narrative unfolds, players make choices that influence the characters' moods and sometimes the plot itself. Characters in a good mood smile, perform amusing idle animations, and support each other, while those in a bad mood display anger, insult their friends, and act selfishly. These mood changes can unlock hidden scenes, encouraging multiple playthroughs to uncover all the details.

Most gameplay involves controlling a character within a group setting, where each member's skills and personality contribute to puzzle-solving. Some puzzles require individual effort, while others demand teamwork.
