Conquer the Iconic Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a legendary clash in the Dynasty Warriors series, presents a formidable challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. This guide provides a strategic walkthrough to ensure your victory.

Mission Objective: Defeat Dong Zhuo.

Initial Strategy:

Begin by capturing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. Securing two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Systematically eliminate these forces; defeating Zhang Liao rewards you with the twin pike weapon. Once all bases are secured, assault Hulao Gate.

The First Encounter with Dong Zhuo's Forces:

This initial battle is chaotic. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he initiates his Grand Tactic, significantly weakening the enemy defenses.

Lu Bu's Arrival:

Lu Bu's appearance marks a critical turning point. Avoid direct confrontation. He is overwhelmingly powerful. Instead, focus on eliminating enemy officers around the periphery to maintain morale, which Lu Bu's presence drastically depletes.

Lu Bu will eventually attack your main base (Yuan Shao). Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will temporarily contain him, giving you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. This creates a time constraint; if Liu Bei's forces are routed, Lu Bu will defeat Yuan Shao, ending the mission.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

Once Lu Bu departs, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Capture the northern and western bases to prepare for the final assault. When fully healed and with all three squads ready, charge towards Dong Zhuo.

Dong Zhuo will unleash two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to break through enemy lines and eliminate the soldiers and officers guarding the catapults. Your forces will then destroy the catapults.

The second Grand Tactic necessitates defeating one of Dong Zhuo's officers. Ascend the stairs on the right, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan. If possible, duel her; defeating her simplifies the encounter.

Once the Grand Tactic is thwarted, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should be strong enough to overwhelm his remaining army. Dian Wei might even launch a Grand Tactic, further aiding your advance. While a duel is tempting, simply defeat Dong Zhuo conventionally.
