One of the most delightful aspects of managing a farm in Stardew Valley is the variety of animals you can have roaming around, from livestock to beloved pets. Excitingly, the 1.6 update released in early 2024 has introduced the ability to adopt multiple pets, enhancing the charm and companionship on your farm. Here's how you can expand your furry family.

When you begin your journey in Stardew Valley, you're given the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog to join you on your farm. Historically, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the latest update changed that, allowing for a more diverse pet family.

To unlock the option for multiple pets, you must first maximize your friendship level with your existing pet. This involves filling their water bowl daily with your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day; a heart bubble appearing over their head indicates a successful interaction. You can monitor your pet’s friendship progress in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.

Once your pet's friendship meter is full, Marnie will send you a notice via mail about adopting additional pets available at her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted your initial pet by the end of the first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.

After selecting your new pets, head to Robin’s carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each of them. These bowls are essential not only for providing water but also serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing them from running away if neglected. You can find Pet Bowls under the "Construct Farm Buildings" menu at Robin’s, each costing 5,000g and requiring 25 x Hardwood, which you can gather using a Copper Axe or better. It's advisable to buy these before adopting your pets to maintain their friendship points.
