Antony Starr Reacts to Homelander Fans Glorifying The Boys Villain

Antony Starr, who portrays Homelander in The Boys, has expressed bewilderment at how some viewers idolize his sociopathic super-villain character, describing the phenomenon as "surreal."

Since its 2019 debut, The Boys has dominated as Prime Video's breakout hit with its ultra-violent action and dark comedy that brilliantly satirizes modern superhero media. Adapted from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic series, the show follows the titular vigilante group battling against Homelander's authoritarian regime of corrupted superheroes.

A Psychopathic Leader With Deadly Powers

Homelander rules The Seven as a merciless dictator whose immense power leaves both teammates and civilians helpless against his cruelty. The unstable supe operates without consequences, using his godlike abilities to indulge his darkest impulses unchecked.

During an Entertainment Weekly interview, Starr recounted confronting fans who romanticized Homelander online: "We had to remind some viewers that he's not a hero worth celebrating. Their enthusiastic support for this monster was truly surreal."

The actor admitted surprise at audiences empathizing with a character who commits increasingly horrific acts: "I never anticipated people would feel conflicted about such an outright villain."

Showrunner Eric Kripke previously addressed similar concerns before Season 4's release, dismissing claims about the show becoming "woke" while condemning Homelander apologists:

"Anyone calling Homelander heroic clearly missed the point. The show isn't subtle - if that's your takeaway, I can't help you."
Who will survive The Boys' final season?

Kripke confirmed Homelander's characterization intentionally mirrors Donald Trump's political rise since the show's 2016 conception:

"The intersection of celebrity worship and authoritarianism became central to our storytelling as real-world events unfolded. We felt compelled to explore how media enables fascism."

The Boys will conclude with its currently filming fifth season.
