Kieran Culkin Cast as Caesar Flickerman in New Hunger Games

by Blake Oct 23,2025

After months of speculation, Lionsgate has confirmed that Succession star Kieran Culkin will portray a young Caesar Flickerman in the upcoming film adaptation of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Lionsgate made the announcement on X/Twitter today, putting to rest the swirling rumors about who would take on the role of the eccentric and flamboyant Hunger Games television host in next year's book-to-movie production. The mystery had captivated readers since earlier this year, and with the official confirmation, anticipation is now focused on Lionsgate's execution of this new prequel.

Sunrise on the Reaping is the latest prequel adaptation for dedicated Hunger Games fans. Set after the events of 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and long before the original Jennifer Lawrence-led film series that concluded in 2015, the movie sees Culkin stepping into a role famously played by Stanley Tucci, who left a significant legacy as the charismatic host.

“Kieran’s captivating screen presence and natural charm make him the ideal choice for Caesar Flickerman, the disturbingly engaging host of Panem's most brutal event,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-President Erin Westerman in a statement. “Stanley Tucci created an unforgettable version of Caesar—now Kieran will redefine the character in his own unique way.”

Culkin has made a substantial impact on television and film in recent years, acclaimed for his performances as Roman Roy in Succession and Benji Kaplan in last year's A Real Pain—roles that earned him a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. Audiences may also remember him from his early work in films like 1991's Father of the Bride and 1990's Home Alone, where he appeared with his brother Macaulay Culkin. His recent rise, built on sharp wit and magnetic charisma, makes his casting as the dystopian TV host in Sunrise on the Reaping a fitting and inspired choice.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026. The film, which brings Suzanne Collins' novel to life, will feature Culkin alongside a notable cast including Ralph Fiennes as President Coriolanus Snow, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, and others.
