Nintendo Switch 2 Direct: 7 Biggest Surprises

by Matthew May 12,2025

New video game hardware announcements often follow a predictable pattern, with each new generation promising enhanced graphics, faster load times, and fresh iterations of beloved franchises, like those featuring a certain plumber and his turtle adversaries. Nintendo, a pioneer in this space, has consistently introduced innovative features from the N64's analog controller to the Switch's portability. With the Switch 2, Nintendo continues this tradition of evolution while adding some surprising new elements.

In 2025, Nintendo finally brings online play to the forefront with the Switch 2. As a lifelong Nintendo fan since 1983, when I was four and playfully mimicking Mario and Donkey Kong with my babysitter, I've experienced the company's ups and downs firsthand. Nintendo's approach to online gaming has historically been lackluster, but the Switch 2 Direct unveiled GameChat, a promising four-player chat system with noise suppression, video support, and screen sharing. This feature also includes text-to-voice and voice-to-text options, enhancing accessibility. While we await details on a unified matchmaking system, this step forward could mark the end of the cumbersome friend code system.

Another major reveal was Hidetaka Miyazaki's new project, "The Duskbloods," a multiplayer PvPvE game exclusive to Nintendo. The trailer's ambiance and design echoed FROM Software's signature style, reminiscent of Bloodborne. Miyazaki's dedication to his craft, seemingly endless, brings a thrilling new experience to Nintendo fans, promising a game that could live up to the studio's high standards.

In a surprising twist, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai is moving on to a new Kirby game. Given the underwhelming reception of the original Kirby's Air Ride on GameCube, fans can anticipate a more refined and enjoyable experience under Sakurai's guidance, reflecting his deep connection to Nintendo's iconic pink character.

The Pro Controller 2 for the Switch 2 introduces an audio jack and two mappable extra buttons, enhancing player customization and control. These additions, though seemingly minor, are significant improvements that many fans have been eagerly awaiting.

Perhaps the most unexpected announcement was the absence of a new Mario game at launch. Instead, the team behind Odyssey is working on "Donkey Kong Bananza," a 3D platformer with destructible environments. This move showcases Nintendo's strategy to diversify its launch lineup, relying on the strength of Donkey Kong and the anticipated Mario Kart World, which promises an open-world experience with zany physics and combat mechanics reminiscent of Bowser's Fury.

However, the Switch 2's price of $449.99 USD is a notable concern. This marks the highest launch price in Nintendo's history in the US, challenging the company's traditional strategy of leveraging affordability. With global economic pressures, including tariffs and inflation, the Switch 2 aims to succeed without the price advantage that has often defined Nintendo's market position.
