Overwatch Mobile may still be in the works as Nexon strikes a new deal with Blizzard
The primary focus of the agreement centers on publishing and development rights for StarCraft
But rumors also suggest a potential MOBA spinoff or sequel to Overwatch is under consideration
Overwatch on mobile has long felt like an unreachable dream, especially after Jason Schreier’s recent exposé on Blizzard revealed that a mobile version had been shelved for years. Yet a new partnership between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard could shift that narrative.
The core of the deal revolves around securing publishing and development rights for a new entry in the iconic StarCraft RTS franchise. Competition was intense, with other studios like Krafton and Netmarble reportedly vying for the opportunity. If finalized, this would place Nexon at the helm of future StarCraft titles.
More surprising, however, are reports that the bidding also included mobile publishing rights for Overwatch — a hint that the mobile port may not be dead after all, and might even signal an official sequel in MOBA form.
Nerf thisThis wouldn’t be the first time Overwatch ventured into the MOBA space, as many recall Heroes of the Storm once receiving strong support from Blizzard. It’s entirely plausible that Heroes of the Storm could make its way to mobile — and this rumored Overwatch MOBA might just be its rebranded successor.
Still, a standalone spin-off remains a strong possibility. At the same time, the notion that this could be “Overwatch 3” should be dismissed — such a shift would mark a dramatic departure from a franchise long rooted in console and PC gameplay.
Yet embracing Overwatch’s clear MOBA roots could prove advantageous. With new competitors like Marvel Rivals looming, Blizzard and its publishing partners may need to act decisively to revitalize this once-thriving franchise.
