Atlus finally confirmed during yesterday's Xbox Game Showcase that the long-rumored Persona 4 remake - now titled Persona 4 Revival - is officially in development. However, the brief 40-second teaser has sparked some controversy among the franchise's passionate fanbase.
While the announcement itself made waves, the trailer's limited content left many players divided. Some critics targeted the visuals, calling out the lighting, character animations, and overall graphical quality, while others expressed frustration at the lack of concrete details like release windows or platform confirmations beyond Xbox and PlayStation.
"Seriously though, these graphics look like default Unreal Engine assets," commented one skeptical player. Another added: "I hate to say it but this looks like a high-budget fan project," which prompted the reply: "That was an uncharacteristically underwhelming trailer from Atlus."
Given how widely known this remake had become through leaks and rumors, some community members speculated this might have been a last-minute acknowledgement rather than a polished announcement. "This has big 'Fine, here you go' energy," remarked one fan, while another theorized: "Feel like they cobbled this together last minute after the voice actors confirmed they weren't returning."
In response to the criticism, P-Studio director Kazuhisa Wada took to social media to address concerns. "We're currently pouring our hearts into this project," Wada wrote. "Persona 4 holds special meaning for us, having spawned multiple spinoffs across different media. We're confident both newcomers and longtime fans will find fresh surprises in this revival."
The director went on to tease broader series developments: "Beyond this project, we're hard at work on future Persona titles to meet global fan expectations. Please stay tuned for more updates." His statement suggests this remake may be part of a larger strategy for the beloved JRPG franchise.
Originally scoring a 9/10 in our 2008 review, Persona 4 revolutionized the series with its blend of dungeon crawling and social simulation. While 2012's enhanced Golden edition remains the definitive version on modern platforms, Switch owners have notably been left waiting - a point of contention that makes the remake's current platform exclusivity particularly stinging.
Persona 4 Revival is confirmed for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC with Game Pass day-one availability. For more showcase highlights, check our complete breakdown of the Xbox event reveals.
