GameStop's Infamous Stapler from Switch 2 Launch Chaos Hits Auction, Bids Top $100K

GameStop is auctioning its notorious stapler that damaged multiple Nintendo Switch 2 consoles during the launch event, with proceeds supporting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Bidding has already surpassed $100,000.

The eBay listing includes the stapler, a certificate of authenticity, and the first Switch 2 with a stapled screen—now refurbished and fully functional—along with its original, puncture-marked box.

“Though the incident was regrettable, we aim for its legacy to make a positive impact,” said GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen in a statement. The winning bidder will also receive Cohen’s underwear, as he pledged to include it if the auction reached six figures.

Last month, GameStop made headlines after numerous customers reported their Switch 2 screens were punctured by a stapler used by an employee to attach receipts to console boxes.

GameStop replaced the affected consoles, most of which were damaged at a single Staten Island, New York store, and has since turned the incident into lighthearted social media content to promote new Switch 2 inventory.

However, beyond one employee’s excessive stapling, fans have raised concerns about the Switch 2’s packaging. The console’s screen rests against a thin cardboard box with only a flimsy plastic sleeve for protection. IGN sought comment from Nintendo on the packaging but has received no updates on potential changes.

GameStop’s certificate of authenticity labels the stapler an “authentic relic from the now-infamous ‘Staplegate’ incident.”

“This black stapler, wielded by a GameStop associate in a burst of launch night zeal, mistakenly stapled a receipt directly onto a customer’s new Nintendo Switch box,” the description states, noting the stapler’s repeated use in the incident. “Bearing authentic wear from its brief but eventful service, it was promptly retired and now stands as a legendary piece of retail history born from a split-second misstep.”

As of now, bids for the stapler have reached $108,895.
