Phom, also referred to as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho, is a popular Vietnamese card game, especially in the northern regions. "Ta La" is the Southern name, while "phom" is the Northern term. In Phom, players aim to collect and discard cards strategically to form card combinations called phoms, while keeping the total points of unused cards as low as possible. Played with a standard 52-card deck and offering diverse play styles, the game is both engaging and compelling. It's a favorite pastime during family gatherings and holidays, bringing friends and relatives together.

Key Terms in Phom / Ta La

- Phom: A combination of three or more cards of the same suit in sequential order, or three cards of the same rank.

- Junk cards: Individual cards that don't belong to any phom.

- Ù: When a player has three phoms (meaning no junk cards left)—this results in an automatic win.

- Stomach: The leftover cards after dealing, placed face-down in the center.

- Mom: A player who fails to form any phom by the game’s end is called "Mom."

- Taking the pin: On the final turn, discarding a junk card that is then taken by another player.

- Sending: On the last turn, if your junk card can be added to another player’s phom, you may "send" it. That card won’t count toward your final score.

- Compensation: If a player takes the previous player’s pin on the final turn and then another player goes Ù, the pin-taker receives compensation. The subsequent pin-taker covers the cost.

+ Additionally, if a player collects three consecutive cards in this manner, it also counts as compensation.

- Re: If, after you play a card, someone at the table uses it, the played cards are transferred and you get an extra turn.

How to Play Phom - Ta La

- A game requires at least 2 players (up to 4 typically). Each player receives 9 cards, except the dealer or the previous winner, who gets 10. The remaining cards form the "Studs" and are placed face-down in the middle.

- Play proceeds clockwise, starting with the player who has 10 cards.

- Gameplay:

+ The first player discards any card. The next player may take it if it helps form a phom; otherwise, they draw from the Studs.

+ After taking or drawing a card, the player discards one card, and the next player repeats the process.

=> This continues throughout the round.

- The game ends when a player declares Ù. If no one does, the game concludes after 4 rounds, and scores are tallied based on junk card points.

- On the final turn: Players must reveal all their phoms, send any sendable cards to other players’ phoms, and then play their last card. Remaining junk cards are scored.

Scoring junk cards (when no one goes Ù):

+ The player with the lowest total score wins.

+ A, J, Q, K are worth 1, 11, 12, and 13 points respectively. Number cards are worth their face value.

+ Tie-breaker: The player who reveals their cards first wins.

- Final scoring breakdown:

+ 1st place: +6 points

+ 2nd place: –1 point

+ 3rd place: –2 points

+ 4th place: –3 points

+ Player who takes the pin: +4 points

+ Player whose pin was taken: –4 points

+ Player going Ù (or Ù khan): +15 points (and each opponent loses 5 points)

+ Burned player: Loses 4 points, which go to the winner.
