Astro Bot: A Platforming Phenomenon Crowned with 104 Game of the Year Awards

Team Asobi's Astro Bot has achieved a remarkable milestone, securing the title of the most awarded platformer ever, boasting an impressive 104 Game of the Year wins. This surpasses the previous record holder, It Takes Two, by a significant 16 awards.

Initially launched in September 2024, Astro Bot, an expansion of the popular PS5 tech demo Astro's Playroom, quickly exceeded expectations. It garnered immediate critical acclaim, becoming the highest-rated new game of 2024 and subsequently accumulating numerous accolades. The Game Awards 2024 served as a pivotal moment, culminating in Astro Bot's prestigious Game of the Year win.

However, the 104 Game of the Year awards, as tracked by gamefa.com, represent a truly astonishing achievement. While this places Astro Bot at the top of the platformer leaderboard, the sheer number of awards won by titles like Baldur's Gate 3 (288), Elden Ring (435), and The Last of Us Part 2 (326) indicates that matching their overall success remains a considerable challenge.

Despite this, Astro Bot's commercial performance has been equally impressive, surpassing 1.5 million copies sold by November 2024. This success is particularly noteworthy given the relatively small development team (under 70 developers) and the three-year development timeframe. Undeniably, Astro Bot has transitioned from a niche title to a major player in the PlayStation franchise.
