The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

by Nicholas Jan 09,2025

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's inaugural console exceeded all expectations, building a legendary library with enduring appeal, even seeing modern re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo's dominance, today they're enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let's dive into the PlayStation showcase!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Playing as a charming floppy-eared creature, you traverse a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel falls slightly short, the collection is a must-have.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a key driver of PlayStation's success. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygon limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Though later entries delve into increasingly eccentric territory, the original remains a standout, offering a thrilling, action-packed adventure reminiscent of G.I. Joe, enhanced by enjoyable gameplay. Plus, its PlayStation 2 successors are available on the Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Let's explore a niche classic. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's shoot 'em up franchise to 3D. While the polygon visuals haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains. Vibrant colors, addictive enemy-capture mechanics, and inventive boss designs create a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While I could easily fill this list with Square Enix titles, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, tasked with following up a legendary RPG, falls short of Chrono Trigger's legacy. However, viewed independently, it's a visually stunning and cleverly crafted RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters and an unforgettable soundtrack.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

Despite my personal fondness for the Mega Man series, objectivity dictates recommending only a few titles to newcomers. In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 offers superior cohesion compared to its predecessors, a brief moment of balance before the series strayed again. The Legacy Collections are highly recommended.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many non-first-party titles. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure elements with polished action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins mastermind, it offers a deceptively challenging yet rewarding experience.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Though initially a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, created by many Lunar developers, shares its spirit, offering a bright, cheerful adventure amidst a darker RPG landscape. Its satisfying combat system builds upon Game Arts' previous work.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft, a PlayStation icon, starred in five adventures. While quality varied, the original Tomb Raider excels with its emphasis on tomb raiding over action. This collection lets you experience the first three games and decide your favorite.

moon ($18.99)

Concluding with an obscure title, moon, initially a Japan-only release, deconstructs the traditional RPG. It's more of an adventure game with a punk-rock sensibility. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and thought-provoking narrative make it a worthwhile experience.

This concludes the list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch? Share your thoughts below! Thank you for following this series.
