2XKO Poised to Transform Tag-Team Wrestling

Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This innovative title introduces a unique approach to 2v2 combat, significantly altering established mechanics. Let's delve into the game's groundbreaking features and the recently available playable demo.

Redefining Tag-Team Dynamics with Duo Play

2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, presents a fresh take on the classic 2v2 format. Instead of a single player controlling both characters, Duo Play allows two players to team up, each controlling a champion. This results in thrilling four-player matches, each team composed of a Point character and an Assist character. The developers even demonstrated the exciting possibility of 2v1 showdowns.

The innovative tag system features three core mechanics:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character can call upon their Assist for powerful special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: A seamless role swap between the Point and Assist characters.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist can intervene to break up enemy combos, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay.

Unlike traditional tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated. Even defeated champions remain active as Assists, providing crucial support. Matches are designed to be longer and more strategic than in titles like Tekken Tag Tournament.

Fuses: Customizing Your Team's Playstyle

Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses," synergy options that significantly alter team playstyles. The playable demo featured five Fuses:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks for devastating combos.
  • FURY: Increased damage and special dash cancel below 40% health.
  • FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
  • 2X ASSIST: Empowers the Assist character with multiple assist actions.

Game designer Daniel Maniago emphasized the Fuse System's role in enhancing player expression and enabling impressive coordinated attacks.

A Roster of League of Legends Champions

The demo showcased six playable champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each bringing their unique League of Legends skills to the fray. While fan favorites Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest, their inclusion in future updates has been confirmed.

The 2XKO Alpha Lab Playtest

2XKO, a free-to-play title launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025, held its Alpha Lab Playtest from August 8th to 19th. Registration is now closed.
