My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

by Elijah Mar 18,2025

I'm generally a practical spender. Essentials and the occasional sale-priced video game usually cover my non-essential purchases. It wasn't until last year that I even considered a LEGO set – a childhood love I'd seemingly outgrown. LEGO's price tag is a significant factor; while some sets are affordable, licensed ones, like those based on movies or video games, tend to be pricier. This explains my hesitation regarding the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. Despite being on sale for under $50 since October, I only recently decided my desk needed a new, uniquely themed potted plant.

My interest was piqued by IGN's build review. A lifelong Mario fan, this set seemed the perfect blend of nostalgia and desk décor. LEGO's botanical line offers lovely flower sets, but none possess the whimsical terror of this little guy.

Having built it, I'm thrilled. It conjures images of the Mushroom Kingdom, a fun, quirky addition to my workspace. The building process itself was enjoyable; challenging enough to maintain my focus throughout an afternoon. It's my first Nintendo LEGO set, but certainly not my last.

How Much Would *You* Spend on a Beloved LEGO Set?

LEGO's high prices, especially for adult-oriented sets exceeding $200, make budgeting crucial. Finding that balance between indulgence and fiscal responsibility is key. The sub-$50 price of this Mario set justified the purchase for me; the hours spent building it and the daily joy it brings make it worthwhile. Is that happiness worth over $50? For me, yes. But that's my personal limit.
