Amazon's Android Appstore to Close its Doors
Fans of Amazon's Android Appstore will soon face a significant change. TechCrunch reports that Amazon is shutting down its Android app store, effective August 20th, 2024. This decision comes after over a decade of operation.
While the closure affects Android users, Amazon assures that the Appstore will remain accessible on Fire TV and Fire Tablets. However, Android apps previously downloaded may not receive future updates or support, according to Amazon's support page.

The timing is somewhat ironic, coinciding with the rise of alternative app stores. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread popularity, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users and developers. Competitors like the Epic Games Store, with its free games program, offer a more attractive proposition.
This closure serves as a reminder that even large companies can discontinue services. However, Android users need not worry about finding new apps; numerous alternative app stores and game marketplaces are readily available.
