Amazon Axes Wheel of Time Series After Three Seasons, Story Unfinished

by Nova May 28,2025

The Wheel of Time series has come to an abrupt halt on Prime Video, with Amazon deciding not to renew the show for a fourth season after the conclusion of Season 3. According to Deadline, the decision followed "lengthy deliberations," with executives expressing fondness for the series but citing financial unviability as the primary reason for cancellation.

The Wheel of Time, an adaptation of Robert Jordan's beloved fantasy novels, stars Rosamund Pike among other notable actors. The series faced significant backlash from fans over deviations from the source material in its first two seasons. However, Season 3 managed to win back a substantial portion of the fanbase and set the stage for what many hoped would be an even more compelling continuation.

PlayThe cancellation comes as a significant blow to fans, especially given the vast amount of story left to explore. Many felt the show was just beginning to hit its stride.

Financial considerations were pivotal in the decision, as The Wheel of Time was a costly production for co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios. The latter also produces the high-budget series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. As Deadline reported:

... the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV, sources said.

IGN's review of The Wheel of Time Season 3 awarded it an 8/10, stating, "The Wheel of Time finally achieves its full potential in season 3, which is filled with rich characters finding their place in Robert Jordan’s complex fantasy world."

Although the TV adaptation has been canceled, fans can look forward to a 'AAA Open-World RPG' based on The Wheel of Time. IGN spoke with iwot Studios, which holds the rights to the series, to learn more about this upcoming game.
