AMD Unveils New Gaming Laptop Chips Using Previous-Gen Architecture

by Aria May 14,2025

AMD has unveiled its next-generation Ryzen 8000 series processors, designed specifically for gaming laptops, with the flagship model being the Ryzen 9 8945HX. Unlike the Ryzen AI 300 series chips released earlier this year, these new processors are based on the previous Zen 4 architecture.

AMD is set to release four new high-performance processors for gaming laptops. Leading the pack is the Ryzen 9 8945HX, which boasts 16 cores and 32 threads with a boost clock up to 5.4GHz. At the other end of the lineup, the Ryzen 7 8745HX comes with 8 cores, 16 threads, and a 5.1GHz boost clock. These new processors share specs very similar to their predecessors, such as the Ryzen 9 7945HX, which also features 16 cores and a 5.4GHz boost clock, along with 80MB of cache.

Despite utilizing last-generation architecture, these processors are poised to be paired with the fastest graphics chips available in high-end gaming laptops. My earlier review of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile showed it struggled when paired with the lower-power AMD Ryzen AI HX 370, which is based on the newer Zen 5 architecture. In contrast, the Ryzen 9 8945HX can be configured with a TDP ranging from 55W to 75W, promising a significant performance boost. Although a Zen 5 chip with the same power budget would have yielded even better results, these new Ryzen 8000 processors should still deliver strong performance for gaming enthusiasts.

If you've been holding out for AMD's latest processors to upgrade your gaming laptop, you won't have to wait long. These chips are expected to be integrated into high-end gaming laptops over the coming months. Below, I've outlined the detailed specifications of the new Ryzen 8000 series processors:
