Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has finally launched its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of an era for this beloved RPG. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, the last major update for the game. With the finality of this update, BG3 experienced a significant surge in player count, propelling it just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game has now soared to over 169,000 players as of writing.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) on April 22 to address the sudden rise in player numbers following the release of Patch 8. He highlighted the thriving mod support, which allows them to shift focus to their "next big thing." It was previously reported that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to create an entirely new project.

In light of this shift, D&D owner Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently in discussions with other potential partners to determine which studio will take on the development of a possible Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

The final patch, long in the making since its announcement in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, brings a wealth of new content. Patch 8 introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play, and numerous other features. The developers provided a detailed breakdown of the patch's contents on the BG3 website. Compared to the November 2024 post, this update includes an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that BG3 is as polished as possible for its final major release.

Larian Studios has left no stone unturned in enhancing BG3, as evidenced by the extensive fixes and updates included in this final version. Although this is their last major patch, Larian Studios remains committed to supporting the modding community moving forward.
