Captain America: Brave New World Nears $300 Million Global Box Office After 68% Domestic Drop Second Weekend

by Finn Mar 22,2025

Captain America: Brave New World's global box office is approaching $300 million, but a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend raises concerns about its profitability. Deadline reports a $180 million production budget and a break-even point around $425 million. While the film exceeded expectations with a $100 million domestic opening weekend, the second weekend's $28.2 million gross mirrors the performance of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs.

After two weekends, Captain America: Brave New World has grossed an estimated $289.4 million globally ($141.2 million domestically and $148.2 million internationally), adding $63.5 million worldwide in its second weekend (Comscore). Despite being the biggest 2025 theatrical release so far, the steep drop was unexpected, given the lack of competing blockbusters. Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted to Variety that this significant second-weekend decline reflects less audience enthusiasm than typically seen with Marvel films. Deadline projects a final global gross of approximately $450 million.

The film's release coincided with mixed critical reception; IGN's review awarded it a 5/10, citing a lack of innovation and underwhelming execution despite strong performances from Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Carl Lumbly.

Marvel Studios and Disney will be hoping for a strong box office rebound to reverse the recent trend of underperforming MCU films (excluding last year's successful Deadpool & Wolverine), building momentum for Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
