Captain America Relaunched by Marvel and Chip Zdarsky

by Natalie Feb 08,2026

Marvel Comics is launching a new monthly Captain America series with a fresh creative team and a storyline that explores Steve Rogers' initial experiences after emerging from suspended animation. This series will even depict the very first meeting between Captain America and Doctor Doom.

Announced at the ComicsPro retailer convention, the series will be written by Chip Zdarsky (known for Batman and Daredevil) and illustrated by Valerio Schiti (G.O.D.S., The Avengers), with colors by Frank D'Armata. The trio previously worked together on 2017's Marvel 2-in-One.

The story begins shortly after Steve is discovered and revived in the modern Marvel era. After reenlisting in the US Army, Captain America's first mission teams him with the Howling Commandos to infiltrate Latveria, which has recently fallen under the control of a young and ambitious Doctor Doom. Although the series will eventually transition to the present-day Marvel universe, the events of this initial story arc will have lasting repercussions throughout Zdarsky and Schiti's ongoing narrative.

“I’ve been a huge Captain America fan for decades. Writing the seasoned, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight was a great experience, so having the opportunity to write the main Captain America title feels like a dream come true!” Zdarsky stated. “We’re delving into Cap's early days in the modern era with a twist that will truly astonish readers! I’m thrilled to share this story, especially with the incredible artwork from Valerio and Frank!

Zdarsky added, “My approach to this title mirrors how I handled my Daredevil run—really focusing on Cap's perspective with a grounded, human examination of his place in this new world. Steve Rogers represents the best of humanity, and I want that to shine through on every page.”

“Captain America has always been one of my favorite characters,” Schiti remarked. “I'm teaming up again with Chip Zdarsky and Frank D'Armata after our wonderful collaboration on Marvel 2-In-One, and we're telling a story that perfectly blends heart, action, and entertainment! What’s most exciting and unexpected is that I find myself increasingly thinking about Steve Rogers the person, not just Captain America the hero."

Schiti continued, “Chip's script is so intelligent and engaging that readers will be drawn deep into Steve's heart and soul. He is a man who became the living symbol of truth, justice, and freedom. He fought a war against Nazism, ‘died’ in that conflict, and was resurrected to continue his duty and fight once more. That’s an immense burden, and when you consider the timeline, he’s only in his late twenties during the period we’re exploring!”

Captain America #1 is scheduled for release on July 2, 2025.
