Civilization 7: Firaxis Offers Hope for Gandhi's Return

by Mila Feb 24,2025

Civilization 7's launch has left many veteran players questioning the absence of a familiar face: Mahatma Gandhi. A staple of the series since its inception in 1991, Gandhi's omission is notable. However, according to Civilization 7 lead designer Ed Beach, Gandhi's absence is not a permanent one.

Beach confirmed that Gandhi's inclusion is part of a longer-term DLC roadmap. He explained that the initial Civilization 7 roster involved balancing iconic historical figures with fresh additions to keep the game engaging. The omission of other significant civilizations, such as Great Britain, highlights this balancing act. (Note: Great Britain, along with Carthage, will be added via DLC in March 2025, followed by Bulgaria and Nepal).

Beach cited previous iterations where prominent civilizations like Mongolia and Persia were initially absent from the base game, emphasizing the difficult choices involved in curating the initial lineup. He reassured fans that Gandhi's eventual return is anticipated.

While the community awaits Gandhi's return, Firaxis is addressing player concerns regarding Civilization 7's reception on Steam. Negative reviews cite issues with the user interface, limited map variety, and a perceived lack of expected features. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but expressed confidence in the game's long-term success, suggesting that the "legacy Civ audience" will grow to appreciate the game with more playtime. He described the early performance as "very encouraging."
