Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3

Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making its VR debut this Spring 2025, exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming, as announced by 2K Games and Firaxis Games at the Civ World Summit on February 8, 2025.

Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed his enthusiasm for bringing Civ VII to VR, stating, "We're just days away from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!"

Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, echoed this excitement, highlighting the timing with the recent Meta Quest 3S launch and emphasizing Civ VII VR as a "genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans." Note that, despite the game's release on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options:

Civ VII VR immerses players in a detailed "Command Table" interface, allowing for strategic maneuvering and detailed views of units and buildings. The game seamlessly transitions between immersive VR and mixed reality modes. 2K Games describes the experience: "In virtual reality, players are transported to an ornate museum; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to its placement in a player's physical space."

The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback:

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from the early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). Their priorities include significant UI improvements to enhance intuitiveness and map readability. Future updates will also incorporate community-requested features like multiplayer teams and expanded map variety. A quality-of-life update is planned for March, focusing on UI refinements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.

Release Information:

Civilization VII VR is slated for release this Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. A specific date has yet to be announced.
