Confirmed: Robert Pattinson Will Not Be the DCU Batman

by Alexis Mar 21,2025

James Gunn and Peter Safran have confirmed that The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman to the DC Universe (DCU), definitively ruling out Robert Pattinson's iteration. During a DC Studios presentation, Safran and Gunn clarified that Pattinson will remain exclusive to Matt Reeves' Batman universe, titled The Batman Epic Crime Saga. Gunn stated unequivocally, "It's certainly not the plan...No," regarding Pattinson's inclusion in the DCU. Safran added, "And we love him, but we've got to introduce a Batman into the DCU. That's imperative. And so that's the plan with The Brave and the Bold."

Earlier speculation about Pattinson's potential crossover stemmed from Reeves himself leaving the possibility open earlier this year. However, Reeves emphasized his focus on The Batman Epic Crime Saga, stating, "What’s been great is there was a story that I wanted to tell...and James and Peter have been really, really great about that and they’re letting us do that." He further indicated uncertainty about the future, prioritizing The Batman Part 2. Safran expressed enthusiasm for Reeves' vision, stating they "love" it and are "looking forward to this film." While a script hasn't been finalized, Safran described what they've read as "very encouraging."

The Brave and the Bold is currently in active development, with the story progressing well. While Andy Muschietti was previously attached to direct, Gunn and Safran are actively developing the script, intending to present it to Muschietti once it’s ready to assess its suitability. Further announcements regarding The Brave and the Bold are promised soon.

The previously announced delay of The Batman Part 2 to October 1, 2027, creates a five-year gap between the first and second films. Regarding the implications for The Brave and the Bold's release, Safran only confirmed an October 2027 release for a Batman film.

Interestingly, Episode 6 of Creature Commandos, a DCU canon starter, featured a brief glimpse of Batman. The image depicted a silhouetted Batman, a deliberate choice by Gunn to avoid revealing too much detail before the official introduction of his DCU Batman. This cameo, however, establishes Batman's pre-existing presence and established status within the DCU, rendering an origin story unnecessary. Gunn's comments to Rotten Tomatoes TV further clarified this decision.

Gunn also hinted at a future team-up between the DCU Batman and Superman, stating, "This is the DCU Batman...He's the most popular superhero in the world and I can't wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman, and together."
