"Cujo Gets a New Life on Netflix: Stephen King's Classic Reimagined"

by Lillian May 25,2025

In the ever-evolving world of film remakes and Stephen King adaptations, fans are in for a treat with the announcement of a new version of "Cujo." Netflix is gearing up to bring this chilling tale to life once again, with Vertigo Entertainment founder Roy Lee on board as a producer. While the project is still in its early stages, with no writers, directors, or cast members attached yet, the anticipation is already building.

Originally published in 1981, Stephen King's novel "Cujo" was swiftly adapted into a 1983 cult classic horror film. Directed by Lewis Teague and penned by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, the movie starred Dee Wallace as a mother fighting to protect her son from a rabid dog. The gripping story unfolds as the duo finds themselves trapped in a car with a dead engine, battling both the relentless Cujo—who turned deadly after a rabid bat bite—and the looming threat of heatstroke.

"Cujo" is just one of many Stephen King stories that have successfully transitioned to the screen, and the interest in his work continues to grow. Recently, Oz Perkins released his adaptation of King's short story "The Monkey" in February. Fans can also look forward to new adaptations this year, including Glen Powell's take on "The Running Man," JT Mollner's version of "The Long Walk" (also produced by Roy Lee and Vertigo), and the "IT" prequel series "Welcome to Derry" on HBO. Additionally, the iconic "Carrie" is being reimagined as an eight-episode series on Prime Video, helmed by horror maestro Mike Flanagan.

Stephen King enthusiasts have been enjoying a feast of adaptations, and with the upcoming "Cujo" remake, there's even more to savor.
