Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with information to be revealed gradually, according to series creator Yuji Horii.
During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed that the Square Enix development team is diligently working on Dragon Quest XII. This update follows a May 2024 announcement acknowledging the passing of Akira Toriyama (character designer) and Koichi Sugiyama (composer), and the departure of lead producer Yu Miyake to head Square Enix's mobile game division.
Previous concerns regarding the game's potential cancellation, fueled by Square Enix restructuring and a lack of updates, seem to be allayed by Horii's statement.

Announced during the franchise's 35th anniversary, Dragon Quest XII will be the first main series installment since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Square Enix has since reported that the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake surpassed sales projections, reaching 2 million units sold.
