Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remake Leaks Surface Online

by Finn Feb 14,2025

Rumors of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake, slated for a 2025 release, have surfaced online, fueled by a purported leak of development details.

Gaming news outlet Mp1st reported that a former employee of Virtuos, a video game support studio, inadvertently revealed information about the unannounced title. Microsoft declined to comment when questioned by IGN.

According to Mp1st's report, Virtuos utilized Unreal Engine 5 to rebuild Bethesda's acclaimed open-world RPG, suggesting a substantial overhaul rather than a simple remaster. Alleged gameplay modifications include adjustments to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reactions, and the HUD.

Mp1st further claims that the Blocking system was redesigned, drawing inspiration from action and Souls-like games, addressing criticisms of the original's "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons reportedly feature enhanced visibility, damage calculations have been revised, and the Stamina-depletion knockdown is now harder to trigger. A redesigned HUD aims for improved clarity, while added hit reactions offer more responsive feedback. Archery has allegedly received a modernization update for both first and third-person perspectives.

Hints of an Oblivion remaster emerged in 2023 during the FTC vs. Microsoft trial concerning the Activision Blizzard acquisition. Documents revealed a list of unannounced Bethesda games, compiled in July 2020, including an Oblivion Remaster scheduled for fiscal year 2022. This list also included titles that have since been delayed, canceled, or significantly altered.

The discrepancy between the leaked "remake" and the originally documented "remaster" raises questions about the project's evolving scope. Bethesda's decision to potentially expand the project from a remaster to a full-scale remake remains unconfirmed.

Speculation regarding platform availability is rife. Given Microsoft's current multi-platform strategy and the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Oblivion remake might launch on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and potentially the Switch 2.

Industry leaker NateTheHate, recently known for reporting on the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal date, claims a June release for the Oblivion remake. This aligns with speculated Switch 2 launch timelines, suggesting a possible simultaneous release.

Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Developer Direct next week will feature id Software showcasing Doom: The Dark Ages. While a new game from an undisclosed Japanese developer will also be revealed, it's unlikely to be Oblivion. Windows Central's Jez Corden hints at the mystery game being a new installment in a long-standing Japanese franchise.
