GameCube Fans Excited by New Nintendo Filings for Switch 2

by Anthony May 22,2025

Excitement is brewing among Nintendo fans as recent filings hint at the possibility of a new GameCube controller designed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This development has sparked speculation that the iconic GameCube classics might soon be accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.

As reported by Nintendo Life, a new FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2, and it's believed to be a wireless Bluetooth controller. Further investigation by internet enthusiasts, particularly on Famiboards, suggests that one of the images in the filing shows a label location that mirrors the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.

This news has fueled discussions about the potential addition of a GameCube game library to the Nintendo Switch Online platform. Fans have long desired GameCube titles on the Switch, and with Nintendo having already included games from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy on their subscription service, there's hope that GameCube classics could finally make a significant comeback on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a teaser trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility features and the inclusion of a second USB-C port. Details such as other games and the purpose of the mysterious new Joy-Con button remain undisclosed, though the Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some traction.

Last month, a Nintendo patent suggested that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down. The Switch 2 appears to utilize gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which used rails for Joy-Con attachment, the new system employs magnets, allowing for flexible attachment on either side of the console.

While this might not revolutionize the hardware, it offers players more flexibility in button placement and port location. If implemented, this flipping capability could lead to innovative gameplay mechanics.

There's still much we don't know about the Switch 2, but Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2 where more details about the console will be unveiled.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered, available now on the Nintendo Switch.
