Rockstar has postponed Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026. It was initially scheduled for Fall 2025.
In a statement, Rockstar apologized for this major delay for a title anticipated to be the biggest entertainment launch in history.
"We sincerely apologize for this taking longer than originally planned," Rockstar said. "The immense interest and excitement for a new Grand Theft Auto has been incredibly humbling for our entire team. We are grateful for your support and your patience as we work to complete the game.
"With every release, our goal has always been to surpass player expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is certainly no exception. We hope you understand that this extra time is necessary for us to achieve the level of quality you expect and deserve.
"We look forward to sharing more updates with you in the near future."
Rockstar's statement at least provides a confirmed GTA 6 release date, but it didn't include any new assets. This means the wait for the second official trailer continues. The statement also didn't mention specific launch platforms, leading some to speculate this leaves the possibility open for a simultaneous PC release alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in May 2026.
"Look, there's always a risk of delays, and I think as soon as you use words like 'absolutely,' you risk tempting fate," said Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two, when IGN asked in February how confident he was in the Fall 2025 date. "So we felt very positive about it."
In a new note to investors issued today, May 2, Zelnick expressed his full support for the decision to push GTA 6 into Take-Two's 2027 fiscal year.
"We completely support Rockstar Games taking the additional time needed to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI. It promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds what players are hoping for.
“While we don’t take moving release dates lightly and recognize the enormous, global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, our commitment to quality remains unwavering. As we continue to roll out our phenomenal pipeline of titles, we anticipate delivering a multi-year period of business growth and increased value for our shareholders.”
The GTA 6 delay opens up significant space in the second half of 2025, giving other major titles more breathing room to succeed. Games like Gearbox's Borderlands 4, EA's Battlefield, Bungie's Marathon, and Sony's Ghost of Yotei will no doubt welcome the news. Nintendo, which is preparing to launch the Switch 2, is also likely to benefit from this shift.
Of course, other developers and publishers who may have rushed their games to launch ahead of GTA 6's original Fall 2025 window might not be as pleased. And any game currently slated for release in or around May 2026 will likely require a strategic rethink.
