With the unveiling of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a significant update to its official website, excitement is building as the release date is set for May 26, 2026. The trailer's conclusion showcases this date alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S logos, confirming that these consoles will be the initial platforms for GTA 6. Notably, Trailer 2 was specifically captured on a PS5, ruling out any mention of a PS5 Pro.
This announcement raises questions about the PC and Nintendo Switch 2 releases. While some hoped that the delay to May 2026 might prompt a simultaneous PC launch, the trailer's omission of any PC mention suggests otherwise. This aligns with Rockstar's historical strategy but feels increasingly outdated in today's gaming landscape, where the PC market plays a crucial role in a game's success. Is Rockstar missing a significant opportunity by not launching GTA 6 on PC alongside consoles?
In an interview with IGN in February, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, hinted at an eventual PC release for GTA 6. He remarked, "So with Civ 7 it's available on console and PC and Switch right away. With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms."

Despite Rockstar's past reluctance to release games on PC simultaneously with consoles and its complex relationship with the modding community, fans had hoped GTA 6 might change this trend. While big Rockstar titles do eventually make it to PC, the wait could be substantial. Speculation ranges from a release in fall 2027 to early 2027, or even a year later in May 2027.
In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer tried to justify the delayed PC launch, urging PC gamers to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt." Yet, the potential missed opportunity looms large, as Zelnick revealed to IGN that PC versions can account for 40% of a multiplatform game's sales, or even more in some cases. He noted, "We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue. Of course, there will be a new console generation."

As for the Nintendo Switch 2, its absence from GTA 6 Trailer 2 is not surprising. While the capabilities of the Switch 2 are still unknown, its slated to receive CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077, which sparked some hope that GTA 6 might follow suit, especially considering it's also coming to the less powerful Xbox Series S.
