NetEase's collectible card RPG, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) announcement affects the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, with servers ceasing operation on October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.
Initially released in China in September 2021 to positive reception, the game saw global pre-registrations begin in February 2022 but faced delays before its worldwide launch on June 27th, 2022. Despite its initial promise—combining Clash Royale-style gameplay with the Harry Potter universe and appealing card-battling mechanics—the game failed to maintain momentum.
The decision to shut down stems from a combination of factors. Player feedback highlights a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics, with complaints focusing on a reworked reward system that negatively impacted skilled free-to-play players. Nerfs and slower progression further alienated this segment of the player base.
The game has already been removed from the Google Play Store in affected regions as of August 26th, 2024. Those in unaffected regions still have the opportunity to experience the game's Hogwarts atmosphere, dorm life, classes, secrets, and student duels.
