Meridiem Games, Omori's European publisher, has announced the cancellation of the game's physical release for Switch and PS4 in Europe. The publisher cited technical issues related to multilingual European localization as the reason for this decision. Read on for details and the reaction from disappointed fans.
Meridiem Games' Twitter (X) announcement confirmed the cancellation, stating that technical difficulties with the localization process for multiple European languages prevented the release. While the publisher offered no further details regarding these technical problems, the news has been met with considerable frustration from fans.
The game's European physical release was initially slated for March 2023. Subsequent delays pushed the release date to December 2023, then March 2024, and finally, to January 2025. Pre-orders placed through retailers like Amazon were repeatedly updated with these postponements, culminating in the ultimate cancellation.
This cancellation is particularly disheartening for European fans, as it prevents the official release of the game in Spanish and other local languages. While European players can still obtain physical copies of Omori for Switch and PS4, they must resort to importing US versions.
Omori, an RPG centered on Sunny, a young boy grappling with the aftermath of a traumatic event, blends reality and a surreal dreamscape where he becomes Omori. Initially released on PC in December 2020, it expanded to Switch, PS4, and Xbox in 2022. However, the Xbox version was subsequently removed due to a controversial T-shirt design from the developer's past.
