Marathon Development Updates

Premium Game Model Confirmed

Marathon Game Director Details Premium Pricing Approach

Game Director Joe Ziegler has officially confirmed Marathon won't adopt a free-to-play model. During Bungie's April 13 gameplay showcase revealing the September 2025 release date and new trailer, the company remained tight-lipped about exact pricing, sparking player speculation.

Speaking on the Friends Per Second podcast, Ziegler explained: "We're confident our offering will be compelling enough for players to invest in the initial purchase. We're committed to delivering seasonal content that evolves the game without additional costs beyond the base price."

Marathon Price Point Considerations

The director emphasized their focus on delivering quality above all: "Price perception varies among players, but our priority is ensuring the game delivers outstanding value." Following fan speculation across social platforms, Bungie clarified via X (formerly Twitter) that while not full-priced, Marathon will be a premium product with summer pricing announcements planned.

Proximity Chat Excluded for Player Safety

Developer Explains Proximity Chat Decision

Despite becoming standard in modern multiplayer titles, proximity voice chat won't feature in Marathon. Bungie cites concerns over maintaining positive player interactions as the primary reason for this exclusion.

Ziegler told PC Gamer: "While we recognize prox chat's potential for immersion, creating a safe gaming environment takes priority. We haven't found adequate solutions to prevent the toxicity these systems often enable."

Future Communication Features Considerations

The director acknowledged the strategic depth such systems could add to this extraction shooter but reiterated: "The industry collectively struggles with this challenge. If we discover effective solutions, we'd reconsider implementation. For now, we're prioritizing other social features that align with our community standards."

Marathon arrives on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 23, 2025. Stay tuned for further updates as we approach the summer pricing announcement.
