Mario Kart World's debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 does not include the high-octane 200cc mode, though Nintendo has suggested it could arrive in a future update.
The 200cc mode first appeared in Mario Kart 8 via a post-launch update. Nintendo might be planning a similar approach for Mario Kart World, the series' latest chapter.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Mario Kart World producer Kosuke Yabuki noted the popularity of the 200cc mode but remained tight-lipped about its potential return.
"Many fans enjoy the challenge of advanced difficulty modes like this," Yabuki hinted. "But will we introduce engine sizes beyond 150cc in Mario Kart World? I can’t share details just yet."
Excluding 200cc at launch makes sense. It gives players time to master tracks at the standard 150cc level (or lower, if preferred) before tackling the demanding 200cc mode later.
This approach suits Mario Kart World’s multiplayer focus, where players team up, explore together, and connect via GameChat with cameras on.
When the 200cc update eventually arrives, players will likely need to race at the same difficulty to explore the game’s map together. Starting with 150cc allows everyone to build skills before the intensity ramps up.
Mario Kart World launches this week alongside the Nintendo Switch 2, featuring an open map for free exploration. However, IGN cautions it’s not akin to Forza Horizon. Separately, IGN inquired about the fan-favorite Cow character and whether it’s actually eating beef.
