Although we had a chance to experience Mario Kart World firsthand last week, the specifics of Free Roam mode remained under wraps until this presentation. This new feature marks a significant departure from previous Mario Kart titles, introducing an open-world structure reminiscent of Forza Horizon. Instead of isolated race tracks, Mario Kart World integrates them into a vast interconnected world. This means you can drive freely between circuits in certain modes and enjoy some fun-filled exploration in between races.
When you're not competing, Free Roam becomes your playground for discovery. The map is filled with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though their exact function remains a mystery at this point. You’ll also come across P-Switches that, when activated, trigger mini-challenges—like collecting blue coins—to keep things engaging.
Free Roam isn't just about racing or collecting—it also offers creative opportunities. At any moment, you can launch Photo Mode to capture unique shots of your character in different poses and scenic spots throughout the world. And yes, this mode supports multiplayer too! Up to four players can join together on a single system using split screen, or connect wirelessly with up to eight players total (two per system), allowing you to explore, race, pose, or simply hang out with friends.
Beyond Free Roam, today’s Mario Kart World Direct showcased several other updates including new characters, tracks, and additional gameplay modes. For a full breakdown of everything announced, [ttpp] be sure to check out our full coverage.
