MCU Update: Chris Evans Addresses Avengers Return Rumors

by Natalie Feb 12,2025

Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports

Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.

This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans's return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU. Evans reiterated his retirement to Esquire, stating that such rumors surface periodically since Avengers: Endgame and that he's ceased responding to them.

While Evans has returned to the superhero genre in a comedic supporting role as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, his statement firmly closes the door on a Captain America comeback.

The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror due to assault and harassment charges. Majors's planned role as the MCU's next Thanos-level villain has been replaced by Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., sparking speculation about the return of other original Avengers. However, no other returns have been officially confirmed.

Benedict Cumberbatch, while confirming Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, indicated a "central role" for the character in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
