Nintendo's stricter content guidelines raise concerns for creators. The updated "Game Content Guidelines for Online Video & Image Sharing Platforms," effective September 2nd, impose harsher penalties for violations, including potential bans from sharing Nintendo-related content.

Previously, Nintendo primarily targeted content deemed "unlawful, infringing, or inappropriate." The new guidelines expand enforcement, allowing proactive content removal and creator restrictions. This significantly increases the risk of bans for creators who inadvertently or intentionally break the rules.

Two key additions to the prohibited content list highlight the increased scrutiny: content that disrupts multiplayer gameplay and content containing graphic, explicit, harmful, or offensive material. These changes are likely a response to past incidents, including the removal of a Splatoon 3 video by Liora Channel.

Liora Channel's video, featuring interviews with female players discussing dating experiences within Splatoon 3, was deemed unacceptable by Nintendo. The creator publicly committed to avoiding sexually suggestive Nintendo-related content moving forward. This incident, and similar concerns about predatory behavior in online games (as reported by Bloomberg regarding Roblox), likely fueled Nintendo's stricter approach.

Nintendo's strengthened guidelines aim to protect young players from harmful content. However, the broader implications for content creators require careful consideration. The increased risk of bans necessitates a thorough understanding of the updated rules and a more cautious approach to content creation.
