"Nintendo Switch 2 Controller Patent Hints at Sequel to Best-Selling Game"

by Eleanor Jan 07,2026

A recently uncovered patent has sparked excitement among Nintendo fans, hinting at the development of a Ring Fit Adventure sequel tailored for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Filed at the end of May 2025 and only recently made public—though with all images redacted—the document lists Nintendo as the patent holder under the category "video game controllers (accessories)." Notably, Fumiyoshi Suetake, a key designer behind the original Ring Fit Adventure, is credited as the inventor.

Suetake played a pivotal role in creating the 2019 fitness hit, which combines RPG elements with physical exercise using a unique ring-shaped controller. Since its release, Ring Fit Adventure has sold over 15 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful motion-based fitness games on the market. His involvement in the new patent strongly suggests that this upcoming accessory could be a next-generation evolution of the Ring Fit system.

Further supporting this theory, Nintendo recently renewed the patent for the original Ring Fit Adventure controller, signaling continued investment in the product line. Additionally, Foxconn, a major manufacturing partner for Nintendo, has revealed development work on new "force sensing technology" for a leading gaming company. Accompanying documentation includes a schematic strikingly similar to the original Ring Fit device, reinforcing speculation of an upgraded hardware design.

Together, these developments strongly indicate that a new Ring Fit Adventure title is in development, potentially timed for release alongside the Nintendo Switch 2. Given the original game’s massive success—particularly during periods of homebound fitness demand—a sequel would be a strategic and logical next step for Nintendo.

"Ring Fit Adventure offers an inventive fitness RPG that doesn’t quite have all the moves," IGN noted in its original review, applauding the game’s "fun and challenging blend of exercise and RPG mechanics."
