The Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz, and while it may look familiar at first glance, the real innovation seems to be centered around its Joy-Cons. Although Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these details, recent reports and newly surfaced patents suggest significant changes to the Joy-Con design, particularly in how they attach and function.
According to the latest reports, the Joy-Cons for the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature magnetic attachments, allowing them to connect to the console in a new way. This is further supported by a series of patents filed by Nintendo, which detail the use of magnets for securing the Joy-Cons to the console. The patent describes, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing."
The patent also outlines a unique detachment mechanism, requiring the pressing of two buttons located on the top surface of the Joy-Con's protrusion. It states, "The first button and the second button are provided in the longitudinal direction in the top surface of the protrusion. The first button and the second button are to be pressed by a user. The first button is attracted to the first magnet by a magnetic force. The second button is attracted to the second magnet by a magnetic force."
Perhaps one of the most intriguing features revealed in the patent is the potential for the Joy-Cons to function as a computer mouse. Illustrations included in the patent show a player using the Joy-Con in a mouse-like configuration, with the controller held railside down and the shoulder buttons acting as mouse buttons. Specifically, the R1 and R2 buttons would serve as the left and right mouse buttons, respectively, and there may even be a scrolling function integrated into the joysticks.
Further illustrations demonstrate the versatility of this mouse-like feature, showing it can be used in various configurations, such as a dual mouse setup or with one Joy-Con acting as a mouse while the other functions as a traditional game controller.
The magnetic attachment of the Joy-Cons was among the earliest leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2, while the mouse-like functionality surfaced later and has yet to be officially confirmed. However, a teaser released by Nintendo in January subtly hinted at this feature, showing the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface in a manner reminiscent of a computer mouse.
