Nintendo Unveils Zelda Movie Release Date via New App

Nintendo has officially announced that the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda will hit theaters on March 26, 2027. This exciting news was shared through the newly launched Nintendo Today! app, introduced during the Nintendo Direct event in March 2025. Shigeru Miyamoto, a video game icon, unveiled this information in a surprise segment at the end of the showcase. The Nintendo Today! app is designed to be an essential tool for Nintendo enthusiasts, offering a daily calendar and a constant stream of news updates directly to users' smartphones. Miyamoto highlighted that following next week's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fans can use the app to stay updated with daily news.

The announcement of the Zelda movie's release date has already spurred interest in the app, as fans eagerly anticipate more groundbreaking news. It's noteworthy that the Nintendo Today! app broke the news before any official posts on Nintendo's social media platforms.

Back in November 2023, Nintendo and Sony Pictures jointly announced the development of this live-action film, with Wes Ball, known for directing The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, at the helm. The production is being overseen by Avi Arad and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto. While details about the movie remain scarce, Wes Ball has expressed his vision for the film to be a "live-action Miyazaki," drawing inspiration from the legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, known for his work with Studio Ghibli and classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. Ball aims for a "serious" and "grounded" adaptation, explicitly stating his intention to minimize the use of motion capture technology.
