Oblivion Remastered Gains Steam Momentum

by Isaac Sep 29,2025

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered made a massive splash on Steam, reaching over 180,000 concurrent players on launch day.

After Bethesda surprise-released Oblivion Remastered on April 22, it quickly climbed to the #1 spot on Steam's global top-seller list by revenue, surpassing major titles like Counter-Strike 2, viral sensation Schedule I, and the newly updated Overwatch 2.

Oblivion Remastered became the fourth most-played game on Steam at launch, trailing only Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, and Dota 2. It currently stands as Steam's top single-player RPG, outperforming Baldur's Gate 3, and maintains a 'Very Positive' user review rating.

PlayWhile Steam stats reveal impressive numbers, Oblivion Remastered's success extends beyond PC. As a Microsoft-owned title (via Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media), the game launched day-one on Xbox Game Pass for Ultimate subscribers, potentially expanding its player base significantly.

When accounting for PlayStation 5 and standard Xbox Series X/S players - though exact numbers remain undisclosed - Oblivion Remastered's true launch day concurrent players likely far exceeded the Steam-recorded 180,000.

The remaster appears to be a major success, though Bethesda hasn't shared official sales figures yet. Player counts are expected to grow further as the game enters its first weekend after release.

Developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered features extensive visual and gameplay improvements. Along with expected 4K/60fps performance, the update includes revamped leveling systems, enhanced character creation, improved combat animations, and redesigned menus. New additions like expanded dialogue, refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have led some fans to consider it more of a remake than a remaster - though Bethesda has explained its approach as the latter.

The original Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion launched in 2006 (with a PS3 version following in 2007) as the follow-up to the beloved Morrowind. Set in Cyrodiil, the game pits players against a fanatical cult attempting to open portals to the demonic Oblivion realm.
