Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Series from Jon Favreau in the Works for Disney+

by Daniel Mar 18,2025

Disney veteran Jon Favreau is teaming up with Disney+ to bring the classic animated icon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to life in a new series. Favreau, known for his expertise in blending live-action and animation, will serve as both writer and producer. While plot details and casting remain under wraps, this project promises a unique take on Oswald.

Oswald, a creation of Walt Disney, holds a significant place in Disney history, though his initial run with the company was brief (26 silent cartoons from 1927-1928) due to a rights dispute with Universal. This ultimately led to the creation of Mickey Mouse, as detailed in our in-depth look at Disney's 100-year history. Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006 and released a new short featuring the character in 2022. This new series signifies a more substantial commitment to Oswald's legacy. A release date is yet to be announced.

Beyond this project, Favreau remains busy within the Disney sphere. His contributions to the Star Wars universe (The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, Ahsoka) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are well-known. He also directed the 2019 Lion King remake and will direct again for The Mandalorian and Grogu theatrical release in 2026.

Interestingly, Oswald’s recent resurgence includes a 2023 horror film, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, starring Ernie Hudson. This independent project offers a stark contrast to Favreau’s upcoming Disney+ series.
