Palworld Developer Addresses Piracy Accusations

Six months after Palworld's early access launch, its developer confirms no official plagiarism complaint has been filed by Nintendo. Back in January, The Pokémon Company announced an investigation into potential copyright infringement, hinting at possible legal action. However, Nintendo appears to have taken no further steps. Meanwhile, Palworld's developers are focusing on the game's full release later this year.

Palworld, an open-world monster-catching game, features creatures called "Pals." Players capture and utilize Pals in combat, labor, and as mounts. Firearms are also integrated, serving as self-defense against hostile factions and equippable by Pals. Pals can be deployed in battles or assigned base tasks like crafting and cooking. Each Pal boasts unique Partner Skills for diverse situations. While similarities to the Pokémon franchise exist in certain mechanics and character designs, Nintendo's response has been notably absent.

According to Game File, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe states he's received no communication from Nintendo or The Pokémon Company, contradicting the initial impression from the Pokémon Company's statement. "Nothing at all," Mizobe stated, adding his fondness for and respect for Pokémon, a series he grew up with. Despite the lack of legal action, fan comparisons persist, fueled by Palworld's recent Sakurajima update.

In a January blog post, Mizobe also revealed that Palworld's 100 character concepts originated from a 2021 hire—a recent graduate who had previously been unsuccessful in securing employment elsewhere. The game's unique blend of monster-catching and firearms has led to it being dubbed "Pokémon with guns," propelling its popularity following its release. Fans had long desired an open-world monster-catching game accessible on platforms beyond Nintendo consoles.

Initial Palworld trailers sparked speculation about its authenticity due to its resemblance to Pokémon. Pocketpair has indicated a PlayStation release is likely, but other console ports remain unannounced.
