Pokémon Rings in the Year of the Snake with a Charming Animated Short

Pokémon celebrated the 2025 Lunar New Year, the Year of the Snake, with a heartwarming animated short featuring Ekans and Arbok. The video, released January 29th, 2025 on Pokémon's YouTube channel, showcases a delightful interaction between two Ekans – one a Shiny variant – and their subsequent encounter with an Arbok.

The short film depicts a comical yet touching scene where a Shiny Ekans, captivated by its counterpart, accidentally falls onto an Arbok. A surprising evolution ensues after a playful threat from fellow Ekans, leading to a heartwarming acceptance into the Arbok community. The golden Shiny Arbok then departs, followed by its newfound companions.

The video resonated deeply with viewers, evoking feelings of nostalgia and appreciation for the Pokémon franchise. Many commented on the endearing interaction, comparing it to the innocent friendships between children, highlighting how differences in appearance are inconsequential in the face of genuine connection. The Shiny Pokémon also sparked memories of past encounters in games like Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Beyond the animated short, The Pokémon Company also organized several events and released merchandise to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Pokémon GO's Lunar New Year Celebration

Pokémon GO joined the festivities with a Lunar New Year event, starting January 9th, 2025, as part of its Dual Destiny season (December 3rd, 2024 – March 4th, 2025). The event boosted the appearance and Shiny rates of snake-themed Pokémon, including Ekans, Onix, Gyarados, Dratini, Dunsparce, Snivy, and Darumaka (whose Daruma doll inspiration symbolizes good luck).

Players enjoyed themed Field Research tasks, special 2km Eggs featuring Pokémon like Makuhita, Nosepass, Meditite, Duskull, and Skorupi, and a Timed Research event rewarding players with rare Zygarde Cells.
