PlayStation 5 Home Screen Displaying Ads Was A “Tech Error”

Sony Addresses PS5 Home Screen Ad Controversy: A Technical Glitch

Following a recent PS5 update that introduced unexpected promotional materials to the console's home screen, Sony has addressed widespread user complaints.

Sony's Official Response: A Resolved Technical Issue

In a recent X (formerly Twitter) post, Sony confirmed the resolution of a technical error affecting the PS5's Official News feature. The company stated, "A tech error with the Official News feature on the PS5 console has since been resolved. There have been no changes to the way game news is displayed on PS5."

User Backlash and Concerns

Prior to this announcement, Sony faced significant criticism for the update, which resulted in the PS5 home screen displaying ads, promotional artwork, and outdated news. Users reported that promotional headlines consumed a large portion of the screen real estate. The changes, believed to have been gradually implemented over several weeks, were fully realized after the recent update.

The updated home screen now reportedly displays art and news relevant to the game currently selected by the user. Despite Sony's explanation, some users remain unconvinced, labeling the changes a "terrible decision." One user expressed frustration on social media, stating the new thumbnails replace unique game art, creating a less personalized experience. Another questioned the rationale behind paid advertising on a premium console, highlighting the unexpected nature of the ads.
