by Violet May 25,2025

Fans of the iconic action hero Rambo are in for a treat as a new prequel project titled "John Rambo" is in development, directed by Jalmari Helander, known for his work on "Sisu" and "Big Game." According to Deadline, Millennium Media is actively promoting the film at the Cannes market, an event that coincides with the Cannes Film Festival. This market is a crucial platform where filmmakers showcase upcoming projects to attract funding and distribution partners. Millennium Media, previously involved in the production of "Rambo" in 2008 and "Rambo: Last Blood" in 2019, and known for the "Expendables" and "Has Fallen" series, is spearheading this new venture.

Details about the plot of "John Rambo" are scarce, but it's confirmed that the film will be set during the Vietnam War, serving as a prequel to the 1982 classic "First Blood." As of now, no casting decisions have been finalized, and while Sylvester Stallone, the original Rambo, is aware of the project, he is not currently involved. The screenplay for "John Rambo" has been crafted by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, the writers behind "The Mauritanian" and "Black Adam." Production is slated to begin in Thailand in October.

Jalmari Helander's previous work, the 2023 WWII action film "Sisu," showcases his ability to handle intense action sequences, making him a fitting choice for this Rambo prequel. "Sisu" transformed the concept of John Wick into an elderly Finnish commando battling Nazis in the aftermath of the Lapland War, demonstrating Helander's flair for high-octane storytelling.
