Summary

  • Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to sell exceptionally well years after their initial release.
  • Grand Theft Auto 5 was ranked as the third highest-selling title for the PS5 in both the US/Canada and Europe in December 2024.

Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are testament to the enduring appeal of their open-world masterpieces. These titles have not only garnered critical acclaim but also achieved significant commercial success long after their launch dates. Grand Theft Auto 5, which debuted in 2013, immerses players in the life of three ambitious criminals navigating the sprawling, tumultuous city of Los Santos. Its initial blockbuster status was further amplified by multiple platform re-releases and the introduction of its immensely popular online multiplayer mode, cementing its place as one of the best-selling entertainment products in history. On the other hand, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, lets players explore the rugged expanses of the Old West through the eyes of outlaw Arthur Morgan, and it too has been lauded for its quality and commercial achievements.

Despite nearly 12 years since GTA 5's debut and almost seven years since Red Dead Redemption 2 hit the shelves, both titles continue to dominate sales charts. According to PlayStation's December 2024 download chart, GTA 5 secured the third spot among PS5 titles in both the US/Canada and Europe, and also ranked fifth on the PS4 in these regions. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 topped the PS4 sales in the United States and claimed the second position in the EU, surpassed only by EA Sports FC 25.

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Are Still Topping PlayStation Sales Charts

The latest European 2024 GSD figures, as reported by VGC, show that GTA 5 climbed to the fourth highest-selling title of the year, improving from its fifth position in 2023. Similarly, Red Dead Redemption 2 moved up to seventh place from eighth in the previous year. Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar, recently announced that GTA 5 has surpassed 205 million in sales, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has exceeded 67 million copies sold.

The sustained success of these veteran titles underscores the lasting impact and appeal of Rockstar’s creations. As fans eagerly anticipate future developments, the buzz around Grand Theft Auto 6's expected launch later this year continues to grow, and there are whispers about a potential port of Red Dead Redemption 2 to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
