Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Solo Path Away from Avengers, X-Men

by Eric May 25,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signal the end of the character's unique journey. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This comes on the heels of the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine, where Deadpool's desire to join the Avengers was a central theme.

Despite the speculation fueled by Deadpool's antics in the film, Reynolds' comments seem to put a damper on hopes of seeing Deadpool officially team up with the likes of Captain America or Professor X in next year's Avengers: Doomsday. The cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday last month featured a strong presence of veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier/Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops. This has led fans to wonder if Avengers: Doomsday could secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men showdown.

Interestingly, while Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the list of confirmed stars. Reynolds did, however, hint at the possibility of a surprise cameo as Deadpool in a supporting role, citing the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.

As for what's next for Deadpool, Reynolds revealed he's currently working on a new project that involves an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. He expressed a preference for keeping Deadpool "isolated," which could suggest another film filled with cameos akin to Deadpool & Wolverine. Potential returning characters might include Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23, alongside Snipes' Blade and Tatum's Gambit.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Easter Eggs, Cameos and References

View 38 ImagesTurning to Avengers: Doomsday, while the cast list is impressive, details about the plot remain scarce. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, recently expressed his belief that the film will recapture the classic Marvel vibe that fans love. Other cast members, including Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, have also shared their excitement about the project.

An alleged set photo leak from Avengers: Doomsday has stirred the MCU fandom, with some interpreting it as a bad omen for the X-Men. Additionally, fans are speculating that Oscar Isaac might appear as Moon Knight in the film, especially after he withdrew from this month's Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling conflicts.

Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has confirmed that the Avengers livestream did not include the full cast of Doomsday, teasing that "We revealed many, not all," during a recent CinemaCon video call. This leaves room for surprises and further speculation about who else might join the epic ensemble.
