Television has a way of resurrecting the past, proving that nothing truly stays gone forever. In a year where reboots and revivals have spanned from The Office to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it’s now Scrubs' turn to make a comeback.
It’s been 24 years since Zach Braff first stepped into the scrubs of J.D., the idealistic young doctor navigating the chaotic halls of Sacred Heart Hospital. Now, Braff is set to return to the role in ABC’s upcoming reboot, which aims to blend nostalgia with fresh perspectives by featuring both familiar faces and new talent.
This isn’t the first time the network has attempted such a move. Back during what was then considered Season 9, the show tried transitioning to a younger ensemble cast while retaining Braff and other original stars. Unfortunately, the shift didn’t resonate with fans or critics, and the season concluded after just nine episodes.

Now, nearly two decades later, ABC is giving it another shot. The revival comes under the guidance of Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence, who envisions this as a hybrid reboot and revival — a continuation and reinvention all in one.
With Braff officially signed on, insiders suggest more returning cast members are likely to follow, fueling excitement among longtime fans. Speaking to Deadline, Lawrence shared his thoughts on revisiting the series:
“We've been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo. A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it's a calling.”
Originally airing from 2001 to 2010, Scrubs delivered 182 heartfelt and hilarious episodes over its run. While details on production timelines remain under wraps, fans are eagerly awaiting news on when filming will begin for the next chapter.
As the medical drama and comedy continue to evolve, one thing remains clear — the spirit of Scrubs is alive and well.
